I have a 89 f159 302 Larriott. I blew a lifter so replaced the lifters and put a new cam in. Hook everything back up and the engine turns extremely slow. Was checking the timing and now the engine only clicks when I try to start it… put a new starter, starter solenoid and battery in. Does anyone have any tips or ideas about what’s going on and how to fix it?
Does it 'click' once or multiple times? That would be an indication if its bad connection or a bad battery/stalled starter.
it clicks once when I try to start it. I messed with the timing earlier and it cranked over as it should but it started clicking again. I moved a ground to make sure it was properly done and it still only clicks.
That's good. That just means you have a loose connection somewhere or a bad component. Your battery and engine are fine, you're just not getting enough juice to the starter to turn it over. What condition are your positive starter cable in? Did you happen to make your own battery cable? That would be the first place I look. If you wanna get technical, you could use a Voltmeter and connect one side to the positive battery post, and the other end on the start positive lug. Try to crank the engine and see what value appears on the Voltmeter. It should be less than a 3v. More than 3v indicates a component with high resistance.
If you don't wanna get technical, hold the key in the start position for about 5 seconds, then quickly put your hands on the battery cable, starter relay, starter, and all the cables in between. If you find one that's hot, that's the component that has high resistance and needs to be replaced.
