I'm on the verge of purchasing a 1996 Explorer XLT 4X4, 4.0 L V6. The asking price is $6500, I'm hoping to talk him down a little. The body and interior are in *perfect* condition, looks real clean and sharp. Actually, the engine is real clean as well.
It has almost 100,000 miles, and the guy just had the tranny rebuilt, which is still under warrantee.
I own two Fords now and love them, but have never owned an Explorer. Is there anything specific to '96 V.6 4X4 Explorers I should be aware of? Anything to check for on the test drive? Any other comments, suggestions, thoughts on price? Blue book is about $6950, and this Explorer really is in excellent condition.
Thanks,
Scott

Explorers are great vehicles. Since the tranny is replaced, definitely install a tranny cooler once you get it to keep the tranny as cool as possible. Another thing to check is the blend door. Try mix and match the air conditioning unit. If you only get hot air in any positions other than Max A/C, stay away from it or talk the price down...a lot! Check the usual stuff like all fluids and stuff. That's all I can think of. Good luck with your purchase!
That's alot of miles. Check around into the reliability of that engine. I believe there are some issues with head gaskets. Knowing its history is the best research you can do.
Make sure you understand what the tranny rebuild consisted of. That's only a selling point if it was done correctly and by someone reputable. Make sure the warranty is transferrable.
