R1234yf Refrigerant

Any thoughts on the new expensive flammable freon?
Any of you techs going 10k for a new machine to recycle it?

If I get the gear to do it myself, I’d convert back to r134 if it comes to that in any newer vehicle I by. It’s compatible and just needs the right fittings in place.

Funny thing about this stuff...bless technology and all, to a certain point, but why crank out a flammable refrigerant in the name of global warming potential and ozone depletion potential? Does a vehicle burning to the ground and emitting various forms of carbon into the air not add to GWP?

Hmmm...it sounds like the folks that want us to eat bug meal and “own nothing and be proud of it” are at it again. Make expensive refrigerant so you’ll be less inclined to recharge and drive around a sweaty mess all day long. Yuck.

or DuPont's patent expired on R134a so we need a new and improved more expensive replacement that is patented?

They are using it now
Most manufacturers
Some since 2017
They claim you cannot convert back to 134a due to the oil being not compatible
However there are people out there converting them successfully I believe
That's the same thing they said last time when 134 came in in 92 (94 mandate)
They also claim you can let the new stuff out to vent to atmosphere
Watch for that to change

Thankfully I won't have to worry about the new equipment. Fleet pays for all my tools. Don't miss the tool truck one damn bit.
