8.8 solid vs independent
Posted in the Explorer forum also.
Are the guts of the 8.8 solid axle and and the independent the same? I have Limited slip solid axle that i'm not going to use for another project and I want to use the L/S guts in the open independent unit. Can this be done?

I am retired now so I can't check in a Ford parts computer. I believe the case and ring & pinion are the same. Not sure on the side gear's spline count. I would assume the shims are different. But, I can't guaranty this now.
