3.0 Pinging....Is it normal?

I have a 99 3.0 FFV Ranger and I had a pinging problem so I switched my gas to a higher octane (89). Knocking sound was gone.....and just recently I switched to regular gas to see if my pinging problem still exists. It still pings, but it's not as pronounced as before.

Light pinging is normal according to the Ford manual. The question is..."what is considered light pinging"????? When I step on the gas, it makes some noise.....is that normal?

I know there's a lot of threads on pinging but what is considered "normal" hasn't been addressed.

I had the exact same problem, with the switch to higher octane it is all but gone. I plan to stick to the 89 rating to have piece of mind that internal knocks / pinging are reduced. It beats wondering if you are damaging the engine. I also added fuel injector cleaner when I made the switch.

One piece of info that I just read out and found it interesting, according to Ford, as per their Power Control/Emissions Diagnosis Service Manual, the injectors doesn't require any cleaning since they are DRI (Deposit Resistant Injectors) and quote "... The injector is the Deposit Resistant (DRI) type and does not have to be cleaned...". Just wanted to share the info. I guess that I'll be saving on Injector cleaners and use that $$ on something else.

My 3.0 pings a plenty on hills. There's a lot of talk on the lists about a strong relationship between the DFPE sensor and pinging. I just had to replace mine because of a 402 code. I'll see if that helps with the pinging as well. Search the site for 401 and DPFE and you'll see lots of discussions about that.

I understand that pinging is a common problem for Rangers....

My question is what is considered "normal" pinging? Some pinging is actually considered harmless and I want to know what "some" or "light" pinging means........Any guidelines?

Thanks.

It is very hard to describe normal in words. I would consider normal not noticable by the average person. Cleaning the MAF is another thing that seems to help, I'm going do mine in the next few weeks.
