87 F150 turn over, but no start only when hot!
LAST EDITED ON 03-Jun-00 AT 12:04 PM (EST)[p]I have an 87' F150 w/5.0 EFI, w/dual tanks, & 147,000 miles on odo. It runs great except when the ambient air temp gets above 90 degrees. If I drive it for 30 min or more then shut it off, it will restart and die. It smells really strong, but not like raw fuel. It will then only restart after cooling for a couple of hours. I checked the fuel rail shraeder valve to see if it had pressure, it did but it was mainly air with spurts of fuel. Put a pressure gauge on, it read @ 34lbs, low, and cavitating! Put a new high pressure inline pump on it. Still does it! Thinking about a new low pressure tank pump but I can’t just throw money at it replacing parts! I’m wandering if it could be something on the engine itself that is heating up after the engine sits for a few min.? I’m thinking electronics, coil, distributor, fuel pressure valve, vapor lock, etc.
New parts I’ve installed;
Fuel filter (no filter in the reservoir)
Air filters
Fuel pump (high pressure)
I’ve scoured this message board for the last week but haven’t found anything quite like this yet. Nobody I know has ever heard of this problem. Maybe some of you guys have. I don’t have the money to take it to a technician, so… The only good thing about it is that work is within driving range!

Same truck but not as bad of a problem.
What is the temp of the engine when you start getting problems.
I get problem when my engine hits around 200.
When the truck hits around 230 it will almost not start at all.
I have a low temp thermostat on my truck and it keeps it around 160.
Is the problem like you are getting enough gas.
You might have gas pressure but the fuel pressure
reglator will always over ride that.
If you turn up the idle and you do not have the problem then you got a problem that some of the 302 has around this year. Fuel problems with the computer.
