I have a 1961 F-100 with a 223 and original generator which I am pretty sure isn’t working. I would like to know how to troubleshoot the system to see if it’s the generator or something else. Any guidance will be appreciated!
Do you have the factory manual(s)? They will most likely have procedures for diagnosing/troubleshooting the charging system. The Ford manuals are invaluable and worth the money. You might also check on eBay for old copies of either The Ford Mechanic or Ford Service Tips, periodical booklets Ford used as training aids for their dealership mechanics. I used to have an extensive group covering the 57-60 trucks, I know there were several covering generators, alternators, etc.
Good advice. Found one. I guess I was looking for a dumb down version of the procedure since I don’t have a ammeter, voltmeter, field rheostat and assorted connecting wires equipped with suitable connectors. This is beginning to sound like a good candidate for a alternator swap.

The dumb down version is run the engine at an above idle speed, like 1000+ rpm, disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery while it's running. If it continues to run the generator and charging system is working, if not then it could be anything in the charging system, gen, regulator, wiring etc..
If you can get a voltmeter, even a cheap one from places like Harbor Freight it's fairly easy to check if the gen is putting anything out at above idle speed.
I always have to look up which wire to touch on the regulator. Maybe someone can give a quick answer for that.
