looking to get an 04 expy 4x4 with the 5.4 and i want to upgrade the horsepower/torque of it what suggestions are there. i know that i can get a power programer, but do i have to run the higher octane fuel to get the benefits of the program? i also want to know about a supercharger for it but i cannot find a company that makes one for the 03-up expy. anyone that has ideas please shoot them over.
I think the first order of business is to find a way to assess the transmission's ability to handle extra torque. Prior to 2003, Ford equipped 4x4 5.4 Expeditions with a fairly heavy-duty transmission, most recently called the 4R100. Beginning in 2003, Ford used a lighter duty transmission in the 5.4 called the 4R70W. This is the transmission usually reserved for 4.6 Expeditions and is also used in sedan applications (Crown Victoria, Lincoln Towncar, etc.). I think Ford might be using a slightly stronger trans in 2004 Expeditions, known as the 4R75W, but I'm not certain.
Worth checking out, particularly as your dealer will greet you with a horse laugh if your truck arrives on a flatbed with a supercharger, a grenaded transmission, and an owner praying for warranty coverage.
Yes, you have to run super unleaded (min. 91 octane) in order to appreciate the tuner's engine prograrm changes. Alternatively, octane rating won't have anything to do with the tuner's transmission and gearing program changes.
Why wouldn't a supercharger from a prior year's model work on an '03 or '04? What about Lightning superchargers? Aren't all the 5.4L's the same?
