Is it possible

I have a 1999 expedition 5.7, and my service engine light is on. I took it to a friend's shop and ran a code check on it. It gave me 2 codes: P0171 bank 1 and p0172 bank 1, now in looking in the chilton book those are two opposite problems. One mean it is too lean and the other mean it is too rich, but they are on the same side. I don't think it can be both it has to be one or the other.. I am confused....
