I have an '83 F250 4X4 with a 460 and the T19 4 speed tranny. While changing the clutch I thought it might be a good idea to open the side of the transmission. What I found was sludge at the bottom of the tranny. It was a little metal flaked. However the gears looked great and the tranny shifts fine both up and down.
My question is how do I remove the sludge? My thought was to drive 5-10 miles to really warm everything up and then change the gear lube. Do they make something I can run in the transmission to dissolve this stuff and then change all the lube?
I just don't want to do anything to stupid that will cost me a transmission rebuild.
This is a great forum, keep sending the post and replies.
a scraper and kerosene work mighty well. once you get the big chunks out and refill the tranny drive it for a couple miles, bring it home, drain the gear lube, and refill it. that way you're sure to get all the kersosene out before you really need the oil to work.
