1998 E350 Towing Mirrors

I have a stock 1998 V10 E350 Club Wagon with electric mirrors. I recently acquired an 8.5 ft wide car hauler and with the stock mirrors, all I see is the front of the trailer. I've tried some strap/clip on universal things, but they aren't usable past 10 mph because of vibration. Anyone tried an aftermarket replacement that extends out further. Don't really care if its electric or not. Thanks in advance for the help.

Later model Econoline vans have extendable mirrors. 2004 ish maybe. Can’t remember exactly.
You can adapt them to your doors.
Have to drill a couple of holes as the mounts are different.
Factory or aftermarket mirrors are available. You can also find them used occasionally.

Do a little internet searching and you will find all you need.

Beginning about 2002 or 2003 the mirror bases changed from a 3 stud mount to a 4 stud but the later stock OEM-type's can be used with a bit of modification to the door shell. With the right tools and hole cutters its not overly difficult but does require careful layout for the new holes. The door shells from at least 1997 to 2013 are much the same and will accommodate the towing bases.

The OEM types like these: E-Series Tow Mirrors are available in gently used or new imported but naturally the USA-produced versions are a bit more solid.

Good luck with your search!

I did what you're asking about, it wasn't too tough.
I used the gasket as a template for the holes.
Drilled the holes with a step drill.
Pulled the studs out of the mirrors and attached them with bolts and fender washers.
The hardest part was filling the holes from the old mirrors.
I am very happy with the increased visibility with the super duty mirrors.

Anyway you can safely and securely mount the stock OEM extendable mirrors is good---there's more than one good way. I would also suggest swapping the front doors with a good set from a DIY scrap yard although to some that seems a bit extreme. Assuming you can find a good set of doors without the west coast type swing away mirrors of your before photo you do eliminate those mounting holes.

FWIW doors from 2003 to 2013 and the later cut away E-Series cab-chassis models all fit. Those years have the 4 hole mirror mounting surfaces.

For those that did electric mirrors, was the wiring the same? or at least color coded the same? Is the Triangle like trim the same from the 3 stud mirrors to the 4 stud mirrors?

You'd need to consult a wiring diagram from whatever year you're working on--that's the only sure way to know.

The interior trim piece covering the mounting screws are pretty much the same from at least 1997 forward regardless which mirror was used.
