Hey yall,
Sad question but I've got the v10 and she is leaking some oil down onto the y of the exhaust and after a quick peek looks like oil pan gasket or rear main seal. Fast web search shows both them jobs as a big cup of suck for the diy fellow like me. Which means the shop is going to charge a nice chunk to change a cheap gasket. Has anyone attempted this at home and how did it go for ya? My experience is fairly decent, I did the axles, front suspension, wheel hubs on the ex myself in my garage with no hiccups but haven't unbolted and lifted this big a motor. At 190,000 miles she runs and drives mint and it be a shame to call her a loss and dump it off. What are yall's opinion?
Are you 100% sure it's motor oil and not transmission fluid? When the input shaft seal leaks on the trans it also drips right onto the exhaust Y section, that seal leak is fairly common enough on these wagons. That unfortunately also requires moving the trans back off the motor pretty much the same as a rear main seal.
I am not sure if it's the trans, my diagnosis was as followed. While under the truck i wiped all surfaces as best as possible with clean rags to remove any oil substance from engine/trans, as far up as I could reach and as best as I could get it so I could identify new pooling spots. Drove it for a few days and the burning smell was coming back. That next weekend crawled under and inspected, found wetness from oil pan back to midway down trans, collected any pooling spots on finger tip to observe color and all was a distinct brown color, even drip spots collected on trans. Check oil levels and engine oil a hair lower than last checked, trans oil not moved. Have done this a few times over the course of 2 months maybe 3 to 4 times. Have added oil each time I checked to keep the same level on the dip stick. Just not 100 percent if it's rear main or oil pan. Will probably have a shop check it out to have their opinion and possibly a price.
Are you sure it isn't coming from the passenger side head? Some of the earlier v10s had a casting issue on the head that manifests itself when the headgasket in that spot causes oil to leak and run down the back of the engine. There is an improved design headgasket for this.
