Building a 22 f250 lariat 4x4 Supercrrw 8ft bed, 7.3 engine. Comes with 3.55 gears, if I add fx4 it changed gears to 4.60.
Why? Benefits?
Will not be towing.
There is no 4.60 ratio, there is 4.30.
Lower ratio is good for offroad use, better if you plan to lift and add taller tires.
Never spec'd a gas engine truck myself, don't know why that package would force the lower ratio on it.
The FX4 package requires the electronic locking rear axle. For the 7.3 I think it is either a 3.55 or a 4.30. If you don't select an electronic locking the build defaults to the 4.30 for the FX4 package but you can change it to the 3.55 or select the 3.55 electronic locking before selecting the FX4 package.

as far as benefits 4.30’s will give better acceleration, as mentioned if you plan on bigger tires it’s not a bad idea. You will have more smiles with the lower ratio and reports on mpg have been little difference between the two.
I ordered 4.30s, but the truck does turn some serious Rs at highway speeds. More engine wear from Rs with the higher speeds is a small downside. I was willing to make that trade. These trucks have plenty of power for either ratio IMO.

I’m not sure you’re getting any wear at all as far as higher RPMs. These newer fuel injection setups are so precise, it’s not like the old days of pumping gas pedals to prime carbs and washing oil off cylinder walls. A few extra revs may have that oil pump moving a bit more oil where it needs to go.
