Hi, I have a 1986 ford e150 4.9L engine. 4 speed manual transmission. I had the engine rebuilt a few years ago. The engine now has 38,000 miles on it. I noticed a tapping sound several months ago, especially in third gear. Not loud but noticeable. Last week while on the road the tapping suddenly got louder for about 1/4 of a mile then the engine stopped. Tried to start it and just heard a spinning sound, The engine wasn't turning over-just a spinning sound. Had to have it towed home. Medal shaving were found in the oil. I was thinking it could be a timing gear broke. Any ideas?
Thanks
If the timing gear broke, the engine would still turn over but the valves and distributor and oil pump would not be turning. You wouldn't get a hint of fire, but it would otherwise sound "normal".
If the starter is spinning but the engine isn't, then the starter drive ("Bendix" is broken or the ring gear on the flywheel either has missing teeth or has otherwise malfunctioned.
Try turning the engine with a wrench. You might even be able to "armstrong" it by pulling on a belt. Pull the distributor cap and see if the rotor moves when you make the crank turn.
If it dows, try moving it a little more. Button it up and hit the starter. If it engages, that would indicate a damaged section on the flywheel.
Either way, you'll be exercising the tool box or credit card.....or both.
If there were metal shavings in the oil, then there is internal engine damage.I doubt timing gear, unless it has metal teeth."The tapping got louder, then the engine stopped ". is the telltale. If possible drop the pan. Otherwise you will have to pull the engine./
