If they stick with the current dash/screen size for a few years in the trucks and the trucks get this android setup, retrofitting very well could be possible.
You may be able to purchase new parts and retrofit them into older systems, but it's not something that Ford is going to do, or provide support/guidance for. Since some of the 2022 trucks come with the 8" screen, I was waiting for more of them to become available to see if retrofitting Sync 4 into my 2021 Sync 3 system would be possible. I'm not going to hold my breath, and I certainly don't expect Ford to provide any help whatsoever.

Over on another forum there is a guy that said retrofitting sync 4 8" into a sync 3 vehicle will be impossible. He claims to have worked with the system and tested this or something like that. I can tell you looking at the wiring schematics for sync 4 trucks vs sync 3 trucks there are some significant differences in data communications department.
I guess how long Ford will continue to support Sync 3 in terms of updates/fixes is probably a bigger issue for me. From what I recall, there are significant differences between 3 and 4, mainly I recall the nav going to online. I was somewhat relieved when we were upgrading the wife's 2019 Edge, that the 2021 Explorer still had Sync 3. At the same time, I have to wonder how long Ford will continue to "update" sync 3? My "boom box-based" 2016 Harley still gets updates after 5 years, but they are not as frequent as they were when I first acquired it.
Unless you’re a diehard SYNC user, it really doesn’t matter which operating system Ford uses because the majority of people are still going to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and yes, both interfaces will still work

Just wonder what the basis of the statement that most will use their carplay/android auto as opposed to the built-in functionality of Sync 3 or 4?
In my case, definitely my wife's, we rarely use the Android (me) or the Carplay (her) interfaces for navigation, music, phone, etc relying on the built-in features and we use add-on functionality of the built-in wifi and pay AT&T another $20 per vehicle per month as we don't have unlimited plans. You may be correct in your assertion, just wondering what it was based on? My heavily-music-focused stepson does use the carplay interface some, but will go to bluetooth sometimes to use the nav system in his 2019 Ranger.

me personally, if Ford would just allow Apple Maps to be the navigation I’d use sync for all other features as they work fine. Text messaging, music etc

I have used both Google and Apple maps, I thought. I know google, but seem to recall bringing up the map app on wife's iphone on the display when I hard-wired it to the sync. I know there are several compatible mapping apps that will work.
