Air Filter Box Modification

I've heard of a Air filter box modification and was wondering if any one could tell me what to do. I have a 2000 Ranger with a 3.0L. Thank you for your help

Welcome to FTE!!!

People have done a bunch of different things, the most common thing is to pull the "horn" out. You have to pry the box out and then you can remove it from the from of the box.

the best thing i did on my truck, which was recommended by a fellow FTE member, was to remove the air intake muffler(big tube thing located right before the throttle body) and replace it with a 12" piece of pvc pipe. the pipe is much less restrictive. i also removed the hose leading into the filter box, allowing the air to flow right in. i didn't exactly take the tube out, but rath pulled it away a bit so that when traveling at higher speeds, cooler air is still blasted in. your truck is a little newer than mine so some things may be a bit different, but i'm sure you could apply these ideas to it. -jesse

Thanks for the reply Ken. Do I have to cut anything or will the "horn" just come out? Also will this allow hot air from the engine in or cool air from the front of the truck?

I could at slow speeds, I like the idea of replacing it with a large diameter pipe.
