Possible "Hot Spot"

The title of this thread might be misleading. I'm talking about melting plastic, not wifi.

When I got in my truck to leave work, I noticed a spot on my console. It looks like something is getting a little too warm under there. Has this ever happened to any of you? It's not any kind of adhesive. I thought it might be, but after a good look and scratch at it, you can tell it isn't. Is there something here that I should be concerned about?

You may have parked next to something reflecting sunlight against the console. People have reported issues like this with the sun reflecting off their neighbor's windows and melting their siding.

Did you have a water or soda bottle in front of that surface? The clear bottle shape can focus the heat from the sun.

Nothing on the inside of the console there that could possibly cause that.
That looks like something external caused it, looks very much like something spilled on it and ate it up.

Possible sun reflection from a house window I guess. But I have 20% tinted front windows. I was just wondering if there is anything electrical that might be going bad in there. I haven't spilled anything there. The only thing I drink in my truck is water and coffee.

I would agree that this is a possible cause. I have a place on my house where one of my own windows reflects onto siding that is 90 degrees from the window and it has deformed from the heat. I can also see very bright areas on my asphalt drive when the sun is reflecting from some windows next to the drive. The E coating on the windows can act as a magnifying glass. If this turns out to be the cause, don't park and leave the windows down. The glass and tint my help to deflect some on the light.

It certainly looks like it could be a spilled chemical burn of some kind, but if it was I don't think that bottom line would be so perfect, straight, and aligned with the bottom edge of the plastic there. I agree with the sun reflection theory, but way down that low? That's not far from the floor at that point with a lot of dash overhang above it. Crazy. That does suck.

Bingo! I did have a tree hanging there for a couple days. I removed it because it bothered me. Fml.

That makes sense. Some sort of solvent/carrier on the tree. Sun block will mess up plastic too.

If you raise your console lid, that piece will pop off, it is all one piece for both sides. It all just snaps in, but with a little effort, it will pop off.

Haha wow, nailed it. You can totally see it especially the bottom.

When scent was it OP? I hang vanilla ones down by the floor mat on the left side not too far from the kick plate plastic down there. Never had a problem yet.
