Air intake modification
So is this why you hear of some people having problems with the K&N's or is it something else? What about their FIPK's does anyone have any suggestions for or against?
Thank you for your much appreciated, detailed response to:
You will be saving me some $$$, thank you again!

Hey ctfuzzy,
Also thank you for your detailed response to the CATBACK question.
but...
I'm doing a terrible job of staying on topic

You are also a scuba diver, aren't you? One of your post "analogies" have suggested this!

I spent several years working commercially in the oil fields (both the Gulf of Mexico and the North Atlantic off the coast of Ireland).
I then "retired" to South Florida (Ft. Liquerdale, specifically) where I discovered recreational diving.
My last "real job" was in fact as a Diving Operations Supervisor for the Aquarius undersea laboratory in Key Largo (run by UNC - Wilmington, for NOAA) the only full time dedicated scientific diving saturation habitat in existence.

You are one experienced guy!
My Wife + I are both in our 3rd year as Open Water Divers in CT!
This is why I was able to pick out your "Fogging of Dive Masks" analogy!
It's really amazing the people that you converse with online!
And to our fearless leaders:
I know that this isn't a part of FTE protocal, but sometimes you must give way to curiosity!
PS: As for "retired" diver...this does not exhist!
You're just taking a break!

I hate to be the bubble buster, but if you'll search "98 Ranger 4x4" on Google and scroll through a couple of pages you will find more then one story of our 1998 Rangers injesting water via the intake - after running through a mud puddle - and totaling the engine.
That air inlet by the headlight is just fine for "sissy trucks", it's death in waiting for us that play rough.
. . in my *opinion* anyway, FWIW.
P.S. I have scoured the Internet for a snorkel. It would seem they are made for everything ~but~ a 1998 4.0 4x4 Ranger . . . . kinda like cost effective suspension lifts!
I pulled the silencer out of my airbox yesterday, when I realized how restrictive it appeared to be. Seem to notice a little bit more noise when I get on it, and maybe (probably just imagining it) a little bit better throttle response. Anyway, noticed that on my 4.0L, the front of the silencer (on the outside) ended up in a little plastic "skirt" deal, and the setup seemed to keep water out of the intake a little bit better. I went through a carwash and the airbox had some water on the outside and a few drops around the intake part. Anyone else had any problems with this setup? I'm thinking that there's probably no way that water will work itself UP through the air cleaner anyway, just hoping someone can make me feel a little better about it

Thanks,
Brian
