Has anyone had their Excursion painted recently. I'm curious about painting costs now so I know if it's a reasonable price when hunting down body shops. The dealer has very good painters but they screwed up on 2 out of 3 deer hits administratively so it won't happen again--I don't think
It really depends on what it needs fixed to be painted. Dents or rust? The quality of the existing finish. Does it have peeling paint or lots of chips all the way to bare metal? Are you changing the original color? The actual color makes a difference, some colors take more coats to get coverage than others. The quality of the paint job is in the prep work, which takes time. How nice do you want it to look?
I don't really have much at all in the way of dings. The 2 annoying things are the paint has surface deterioration of the clearcoat. It looks like acid rain got it or something. It's very rough. Claying helped some. Heavy cut compound with a heavy duty random orbital polisher did very little..anyway surface roughness issues. #2 is some jackass put a drivers door on but apparently did no prep work. It's white underneath and the X is mineral grey. The paint is peeling off and the clearcoat(if you can call it that) peels off .
I want to to be well done but does not have to be perfect with body work. Like I say I have very little. I don't want one of those Maaco jobs using enamel paint. .Of utmost importance is that the paint and clearcoat must stay on!
The door will probably need to be sanded to bare metal. The rest could probably be sanded into base coat and primer, then sealed and painted. Go to some shops in your area and ask how they are going to refinish your EX. Are they going to remove headlights, tail lights, bumpers, or paint around them. Are they painting the door jambs? You'll get a feel for who is doing good work.
