It is driving me crazy! First off, it is a 2003 XLT 4x4. I have had it in and out of 2H and 4H over the past few months. The vibration peaks at about 50mph. You can then drive through it and it comes on strong around 80mph. It is almost always there. It seems worse when the vehicle is cold, but it is always there. I can feel it in the accelerator pedal and steering wheel and you can also hear it. It does not go away when I put the transmission into neutral, but will diminish, if I put it into 4H at about 50mph. The dealer says that nothing is wrong. On a side note, the transmission likes to clunk on downshifts under light throttle as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to my world! Mine clunks, hisses and vibrates at me most of the time! No, it's not normal and don't let them tell you so. If it is, show me where these additional "features" and "specs" are listed in the brochure? Demand satisfaction. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.
It looks like these tires are crap? What I am really concerned about is if there is any known problem with the front drivetrain. I swear the vibration and ??? is coming from the front diff, transfercase and/or transmission. I have had the tires re-balanced and rotated and the problem still exists. It is actually getting worse. I do not want to be stranded, when the dealer finally agree's it is broke. Are there any TSB's for this problem? My truck was built in Nov. 2002, very early build. I just bought it in May 2003 and at 5000 miles, it is driving me crazy. If anyone can give me the "readers digest" version of what I should "tell" the dealer, that would be great. It is going in soon. I know there are a bunch of posts and it takes a lot of time to read through all of them. It is also going in for the "hissing" air conditioner and clunking transmission, for the second time! Do not get me wrong here, if these problems did not exist, I would have nothing but praise for this vehicle. My fiance and I love it, but could do without the problems associated with owning it. I did not buy a $10,000 Focus, I bought a $40,000 SUV. Ford makes enough money on these vehicles to take care of these problems!
The dealers change the tires, change the rims, change the tire and rims, balance the tires, change the steering gear, change this, change that, but nothing alleviates the persistent vibration. Just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, I went and test drove a GMC Yukon, a Denali, and a Toyota Sequoia. None of them had a vibration, so I'm left with the question of why my Expy vibrates and no one has been able to tell me that. They haven't been able to tell me that it won't get worse and they haven't been able to fix it. If anyone from Ford reads these posts, perhaps you can tell your customers the truth, which only Ford knows, and ask them to be patient and accommodate them until you have a fix instead of sending them away with comments like "too particular", "what do you expect? it's a truck", "it's within Ford specifications and normal" or "they all do that". PS - I've been told that the cost to Ford for the stock Contis: $8 each. I guess you get what you pay for!
I don't know, I have the contis, and I'm no ride expert, but i certainly don't feel any vibration in the pedal or steering wheel. i wish they had gone with michelin, but like i said, no problems here. i think your vibration is something other than wheel related...check other posts.
I'm sure the cost of the Continentals is a bit over 8 bucks.... They're made by General Tires and the only vehicle that experiences recurring issues is the 03' Expedition. If you purchased an early produced 03' Espedition, in most instances you're going to have issues with the vibrations. Put on some Michelins or suck it up. By the last five million posts concerning the vibration, it's painfully obvious that there's an issue that Ford refuses to address and correct (except for the 04' model, very few issues). Whine enough and be respectful about it and Ford will most likely replace your tires. Complain and cause problems and they won't do #$%^&*.
