2 bbl carb, previous owner says it's a 390 but I want confirmation before we pull this stuck engine. With air brakes and the block requirements for the compressor I doubt this engine has been changed out. Thanks in advance for help.
FE or FT. I can't see the exhaust manifolds. If there are 2 bolts per port plus 2 in the middle, that's an FT. I will try to decode it later today. Waiting to have my hoof fixed
FT engines share the same basic design as FE engines. But, the heads and manifolds are different, the crank in the 361 will be a steel crank with a larger diameter crank snout. Mounting is via a cast front cover and perch and ears on the bell housings. Side mount holes are there, but not used as they would be in cars and pickups.
Blocks differ in provisions for air compressor oil return, the distributor passage and possibly in a little beefier construction in the lower end.
In your opinion is there any reason the '64 361FT would be a better base to build a 390 from, vs the 360 out of the '74 F350? Heard 360 rods are "wimpy" but are they any better in the '64 FT?
I have a 390 crank with a fresh .010" under machining but the rest of the 390 assembly needs to be sourced.

It would depend on the condition of the block. If the '64 361 lead a hard life, it may already be bored .030 or more over. The pistons will have ".030" or similar numbers stamped into them. Measure the bore also. If it's overbored, you should have it sonic checked to see if it will take any more overbore.
Ditto the 360, check the bores.
The FT block will need a bushing for the FE distributor and a plug for the oil return.
360 rods are the same as 352 rods and are slightly longer and thinner and are always said to be weak rods. If you are building a 390 or any other FE besides the 352 or 360, you use the shorter rods or aftermarket.
I do not know what rod the 361 uses, but I would guess it uses the short rod. FE and FT rods are the same.
Cams, pistons, heads and manifolds along with everything on the front of the engine, the flywheel and bell are not compatible with an FE build in most cases.
