Can anyone give me their opinion of the new air filter system Motorcraft has come out with, said to be a better system for improved fuel milage, more power etc.
Around 200 bucks and 75.00 for the replacement filters.
Thanks Ed
Are you referring to the new "Severe Duty" box and filter. There have been several threads on the new box and they claim that the air flow has increased quite a bit and the filter is much better.
I have not read any negative comments except for the Tymar fans that get on their soap box and claim the Tymar flows better, filters better, has cheaper filters, etc. Perhaps it does all those things,
but;
If your truck is stock and under warranty, I think by installing the the Ford Severe Duty intake will retain warranty and protect you if you have any "dusting" issues.
I installed mine a couple of weeks ago - got it for about $180 with shipping from Ford Parts Network. It installed easily in less than an hour, and I love the factory look and the huge Donaldson filter.
As far as performance is concerned, I honestly didn't really notice a huge improvement over stock, but that's not why I bought it. The Diesel Stop had a thread going a while back and a Donaldson guy said the AIS actually out-flowed the Tymar, but I suppose that is up to interpretation.
Before I made my decision, I looked at the other systems, and ultimately I decided that the AIS flows well, filters great, looks stock, doesn't create warranty issues and was reasonably priced - a no-brainer as far as I was concerned.
I installed the Severe Duty kit (assuming that's what you mean by Motorcraft) a week or so ago. It definitely increased the throttle response for my truck and I can feel the difference, which I assume would be there is more air intake going on. I got mine from 1stfordparts.com a/k/a Bowen Scarff Ford in Kent, WA. I also had an incentive in that one of the tabs on my box snapped off, and I didn't want my block to get dusted.
I too in put in the AIS severe duty kit. I did it because I noticed that dust was starting to get past the filter. For some reason the stock cover did not seat right or the K&N filter did not totally seat properly.
Anyway, I never really saw an increase in anything with the K&N and nothing changed with this filter. I think any change in MPG has to do with how you drive your truck, jack rabbit starts, 80mph on the highway and stuff like that.
