There is realy only one part that you can have any real effect on, and that is the piston rings. They will run slightly hotter on a brand new engine than they will after a few thousand miles due to the fact that they (the rings) are knocking down the slight cylinder imperfections left from manufacturing.
I would encourage as little lugging as possible or hard sustained pulling for the first 1000 miles or so. If you have to climb a mountain pass for example, do it but in a lower gear than you mught otherwise later on.
A lot of decelerating using engine braking is also good for engine break-in because it allows the rings to stay cooler and 'sucks' more oil up on to the rings to keep them cool.
