Headlight Switch

Hello. How does one tell when the headlight switch is bad? Also does it have anything to do with the back-up alarm button? Every time i go into reverse the back-up alarm button 'OFF' light comes on and will not go off so no back-up alarm.
Any thoughts would be helpful. I did search for this but found nothing that would help.
Thank you.

If you have a multimeter, you can check for continuity through the switch. The switch will have a power wire to it, and the direct that power to parking lights, head lights, fogs and such. Unplug it from the truck noting the colors of the wires and then using the meter to check continuity in a variety of positions.

Another way is to buy a new one somewhere easy to return it. If the lights work, problem solved, if not return it. Its something else.

As for the backup alarm, I have wondered this as well. First step I'd try is unplugging it. If that doesn't work, then you will need to dig deeper and probably use a wiring diagram.

It helps if you explicitly identify what vehicle you're asking about.

Old-school switches did all the "work". Newer designs include electronics that make old-school testing procedures obsolete to a (highly) variable extent. Without explicit details as to what you are asking about, it is impossible to give accurate advice.

It is an 04 Excursion 6.0L. My thought was it should be the same for that your truck also.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, major circuits in the headlight switch in an 04 Exc can be tested with a meter. However, why do you think it needs to be done? It has nothing to do with the backup alarm or the reversing light circuit.

Do you have a picture of your switch ? I have an old one out of my old Expedition that might work for you that I'll give you if it's the same.

I recall reading one time that when a sensor goes bad when you switch into reverse the off light will come on and have no beep when close to objects. I don't have the instructions but look that up and test that instead. The headlight switch has nothing to do with the rear park aid system.
