Hello im kinda new here but i have a question. Currently i have a 96 Explorer Xlt with control trac 4x4 4 door..i work with a guy is has a 98 Mustang GT with the 4.6L with auto tranny.is it possible to take his 4.6L an throw it in my explorer.Would i have to buy a new rearend/axle???im lost but im basically gonna get his setup for extremely dirt cheap.hes replacing his setup with a '03 cobra setup.
Axle in Ranger will be just fine it should either be ford 7.5 or 8.8, which were both used in the early 80 5.0 Stangs without major issues especially behind a stock motor...
Tranny/Transfer case will be you biggest issue, buy manual on both vehicles look extensively at the transmission wiring both should be Electronic Versions of the AOD and should not have many differences, Check pattern on 4.6 and 4.0 for the bell housing that might be your only concern...
You will require all electronics off the mustang, so if he isn't pulling them from the '03 setup he intends to use, I'd pass on it and find a donor car as you are looking $$$$$'s to buy parts seperately
