Lifting a dually??
This is the first DRW truck I have owned but I would like to add a mild (3" or so) lift and slightly larger tires.
I have heard adding larger tires to the rear can cause the tires to over heat. . . anyone had experience with this??
Thanks for any thoughts!!!!
I used a 3" leveling kit for the front and a 3" block for the bacck. No change in the ride. And it still cornered like a vett when it was empty.
I would do it again.
Well I am. Just ordered a 5 inch kit for my 250 and 315/75 tires.
I ran the mud rovers from Dunlop. Not to expencive and best traction I have ever had. a little hum on the road but if you have a diesel then why worry about tire hum. it was not a roar though.
good luck!
Did you/do you ever carry a large load?? I run a lance camper and am curious how the lift /larger tires would affect handleing. Obviously the center of gravity is higher.
What is the load rating on the dunlops, not too familiar with that tire???
Did you run a spacer?
Thanks again!!
They are 33 inch tires but unlike the 285/75 you don't need spacers.
I had no probblem towing. Had a drop hitch for the rear but bead loads or the gooseneck did not trailer any differnt. the list was not too extreme.
I also had the manual 6 speed and there was not change in towing power. I still almost never used first gear unless on a hill with a load.
I don't think the auto would have a problem with the tires. I am counting on it with my nes 35 inch tires. And the old dualy was the 7.3L I have the new 6.0L in the 250. If you have the nes diesel I don't expect you will be able to notice any change.
I had issues towing with the stock General tires. Went through 3 tires before turning 30K.
Put 50K on the dunlops with no problem. The over heating on large tires is BS. As an engineer I would like to have someone explain the physics of how larger tires would over heat. the larger sefice area and grater inernal air volume contradict the therory.

I think the only overheating problem is generated by the tires (duals) rubbing, or being too close, under load, hence the need for spacers with wider tires. Though I understand that spacers effect load capability.
I am going to look into a 3 inch lift first. . . then worry about tires at that point. The dunlops seem like a good fit though. . .thanks!!

I think the overheating problem people are talking about with larger tires on the rear of a dually is if you go too large then the "load bulge" on the bottom of the tires contact each other and get hot.
I hope I didn’t offend anyone.
I chose the taller/skinnier 85 over the 75 just to get the 33” height without the loaded width.I am not a fan of spacers. It get any taller without spacers you almost have to go to bias ply tires or get new rims.
Thank you both for explaining. never did understand the statment.

I agree. . if you want wider tires on the dually it seems the best way to go is with new wheels. While it may be expensive. . . I put my wife and kids in my truck and have to feel safe with it on the highway.
So far I am looking at www.rickson.com for the wheels (and maybe tires too) they are not cheap but seem to be the strongest option I have found so far.
Anyone else???
Thanks!!
