I have been the proud owner of this 1989 F250 4x4 Super Cab with a 460, for 21 years. I’ve replaced the driver’s side front hub, the occasional u-joint and even the steering gear, but I’ve run up on an issue and I’m at a loss.
I went to the local parts house a few weeks ago in my truck, pulled up, shut it off, and it hasn’t hit a lick since. The fellas at the store were kind, but useless.
After many vain attempts at starting it, I figured it had to be fire or fuel, so I sprayed the slightest bit of ether into the air intake. It hit, but just for a millisecond, so I guessed fire wasn’t the issue. Since then I’ve replaced the in tank fuel pickup assembly with new pump, filter, float and sending unit. Replaced the inline fuel filter and high pressure fuel pump, AND the fuel pressure regulator.
Still won’t start.
I finally put a pressure checker on the injector rail(which I feel sure now, I should have done in the first place), when the key is in on I’ve got no pressure, but when I turn the engine over, I’ve got about 41-42 psi.
Any ideas or thoughts would surely be appreciated.
Pull out the ECU/PCM EEC, have a look at pins for corrosion(white grease is normal), open it up, look for bad, corroded, leaky, anything that doesn't look right.
If it looks good, problem 'could' be elsewhere.
If it looks bad, figure out if can be fixed or not.
Well, work kept me from it for a bit, but I finally removed the ECM. Did a visual inside and out and it is a bit rough looking, but nothing really noticeable. So while trying to decide what was next, I took a small wire brush and cleaned off the pins, put some dielectric grease on the pins and plugged it back in, just to see. Oddly enough, it started right up. I tried it three more times, the first time it stuttered and started, the second time it just stuttered, and the last time it never hit.
Thoughts?
Well it’s been about three months and besides just a couple of little hiccups, the truck has started every time, until today.
It’s not a daily driver, so I haven’t really put it to the test, but when I tried it today, it’s a no go.
Any thoughts on what might be eating the ECM?
The refurb was from rock auto and seemed fine, and was, for three months.
I haven’t been too thorough yet. Between the snow, the cold, and the utter frustration, I’ve been slow to act. It’s supposed to warm up on Sunday so I’ll probably give it a look then.
I went so far as to go to a shop today for a little help, but they don’t work on anything later than a 95. I should probably throw in the towel, but I just can’t.
