Tell me everything about "spot weld cutters". I want to drill out & replace the firewall on a 56. Ebay has a 5 & dime - 5/16 dia. weld cutter kit with pilot ? + Any help ?
There are several types, the one that is best is just as determined by your replacement method anything else. You gluing, welding, making compleatly new or stock type replacement?
I have a Blair spot weld cutter set. Comes with a few different size cutters. Works great. Make sure you center punch accurately. If you are off to one side it's easy to cut through both layers of sheet metal and get a hole you have to plug.
Like Scotty I have the Blair BLR11096 kit and got it from Amazon. It is far superior to the cheap one I bought initially which fell apart after about 6 spot welds. I'd definitely recommend it.
It is possible to manage with just drill bits. The cutter can still do a bit of damage to the underlying plate on awkward geometry. Also there are a few places on the truck that are factory spot welded but the plate is too thick for the spot weld cutters. So it won't work everywhere.
I used one that looks like a drill bit as apposed to one that looks like a small hole saw. Not sure of the brand. Was going to post a pic but couldn't do is for some reason. It worked great and left a small hole. Do need to be accurate with your drilling though.
I use this type of spot weld cutters.
A little drop of oil each cut extend the life. Clean up the spot weld area well.
use always a cutter larger in size as the spot weld. You need a chisel too for separating the two sheet metals. Spot weld cutter and sheed metal chisel. Before After Separat by chisel
