I just bought a 1972 F100 longbed with a 360. I drove it, but didn't erally have a chance to get on it. I know it runs perfectly, and started right up. I've been looking around and it doesn't really look like there's much of an aftermarket for these engines. How strong are they in stock form? I'd eventually like to make this a street truck/sleeper/tow rig type deal, but DEFINITELY need power brakes for that. Does anyone make a power brake conversion kit or am I gonna have to fab a hydroboost setup. I really just want to know what kinda power this thing is gonna have, I pick it up tomorrow and then it'll be my DD until my K5 gets fixed. I'll post pics of the F100 on my blazer sight www.cardomain.com/id/bowtiered
I've always been a chevy guy and still am, but i really liked this truck. it's a 4x2 and like I said, runs PERFECT. So, what is there for a 360- other that stroking/boring it to a 390. simple stuff- cam/intake manifold/headers/rockers. Also, just curious, do you think this engine could handle a 50-75 shot of nitrous once or twice down the track? I'd eventually really like to try and run this thing pretty hard. I'm not stupid when it comes to trucks, especially not chevy 4x4s, but I'm definitely in need of advice when it comes to Ford 4x2s.
Thanks guys.
I did the power brake conversion on my 71 F250 4X4. I used everything from an 72 F250 2X (rod from pedal to booster, booster & master cylinder. Worked out great nand easy to install.
Welcome to the forum Bowtie.
If you visit the forum section for the "FE" engine you will find there are many in there that have ALL the info you need. They are a informative group and you will also be pleased to learn that the FE family of engines are real workhorses and can churn out some serious power. I have one and it was a 360 originaly. It can be built to be a 390 with a crank change. That is what I have done, when my engine needed a rebuild. Add a good name intake manifold and carb. plus some other goodies of choice and look out man it will be a neck snapper.
easiest way to get 350-400 hp from FE engines is to take 360/390 block bore .060 over, comp cams 268or 270 grind cam 428 scj heads with 1.73 adjustable rockers, and billet 427 crank and rods (aftermarket) not necessary if on budget but good for 6000 rpms+ offy or edlebrock manifold and 750 cfm carb with a good set of headers and 2.5-3" dual exhaust, those engines are bulletproof and build more touque than a full boneyard of chevys (brokendrivelines avalable for proof) and will pull rught up to redline before the curve moves off peak
