I like the huge-by-large skinny steering wheel l have and I'm extremely happy (also shocked) that it's in good shape...I've had way worse, this one's a keeper.
At the risk of coming off like a goofball, where can l find a lace-on cover for this thing? They're, what? 16.5" diameter?
I hate (HATE!) the big slip-on covers. A leather (or vinyl) lace-up cover is just the right thing to do on this vintage vehicle and an elusive critter that I haven't been able find in a decade or so. Google seems to be heavily leveraged in the business of annoying the whiz outta me by showing everything imaginable except what l asked it for... then telling me to use less keywords when l get too specific.
FU, Google.
After this I'll share my super secret source for chrome plated cobra-head shift ***** with red plastic eyes.
(*hint*; it's Auto Zone)
Jonny, you need to install a Wheelskins steering wheel cover if your not interested in the foam, slip on covers that are covered in a Mossy Oak or Hello Kitty pattern.
Are you talking about one of those covers that are secured by flat plastic lace, wrapped in a spiral? I remember they were available at nearly any auto parts store, on a rack next to the pine tree air fresheners, but I haven't seen them in a long time.

Here's a version shown in an older package, with a bullnose..
Not sure if that is the exact size you need, but it was Superior Automotive #58-0470B.
That's exactly what l was getting at. I never even considered an RV store as a source, so thank you for the inspiration.
I used to find these things in car washes, parts stores, and gas stations too. But l think they fell out of favor with the slip-on jobs being more popular... maybe people are too lazy now to spend 15-20 min putting one on... ? It's a small thing, a detail. But l like em and they help protect the hard plastic tillers from UV damage. At the risk of sounding like a tool, they also give off a little vintage vibe... Old School and whatnot.
58-0470B Superior Automotive Steering Wheel Cover Fits 16 To 18 Inch

I installed one of their covers on my 71 Oldsmobile and it looks great!
I like the looks of those and from their website, 80-86 trucks take size A.
At $60 bucks it's a slightly bigger investment than l was bargaining for, but the customers seem to be very happy... even without a Hello Kitty option!
Autozone carries them by the other steering wheel covers. They should be on a hook in that area.
Last time l actually checked, they did in fact have some but they were all 15" or less. The vinyl ones will stretch a bit, but they ain't gonna go 1 and a half to 2 inches.
The bigger ones (16-17") all seem to be backordered. I found a leather one on Amazon that'll be here next week... I'll let you know how it goes.
I had one of the foam ones with plastic lacing in my 64 Oldsmobile 20 years ago. Come to think of it, I haven't seen them available in parts stores lately.
The PO of mine wrapped the wheel and center with parachute line.
Did a nice job just not my cup of tea for the look I was after so I used the column from my parts truck.

Way back in 1986 I put one of those faux leather (read plastic/rubber) steering wheel covers on with the plastic lacing. I didn't like the feel of it so went with the premium leather one with the waxed thread and pre punched holes. The fit was better going over the faux leather cover so it's still there underneath providing extra cushion but hidden by the leather cover which is a pleasure to handle. I've been wanting to get another leather cover since the spot I hang on to mostly is worn down to the underlying rubber one. Before putting the leather one on I removed the spiral plastic lacing. So now thanks to this thread I found a new leather lace on cover on amazon. They had disappeared from stores and on line for many years. Nope not wanting to spend 60 bucks on the ones made in San Francisco. All the leather ones I've bought in the past were about 10 bucks. The one on amazon was 14 bucks. Afable!
