rear fuel tank replacement

Hi there

I have a '78 F150 custom with a side OEM plastic tank and a rear steel fuel tank. I've removed the bed and removed the rear fuel tank as of now. Since it's out I'm going to replace it as it's fairly rusted and the sending unit is seized in place. 19 gallon with no emission hole.

My question is does any one have any experience replacing the rear with a plastic tank? Typical fit? Longevity?

Opinions on replacing it with plastic vs steel would greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Greg

I put a poly tank in the rear of my truck a few years ago. No problems yet.

I got the 38 Gallon tank from LMC, they make a fuel sender for it now, so no more mods to the old unit or messing up a new one!

I saw someone install one here before and followed what they did, cleaned it, scuffed it, painted it with anti rust paint.

I've been driving around for 12 days after a fill up and its still 3/4 full! 351m with a 3.73 rear end, 3 on the tree... city cruiser, driven almost every other day.

I'd go with the larger capacity myself... just made more sense in the long run!

Good luck with your choice!

Thanks for that. Now you have me thinking....38g...
I've been contemplating keeping the spare tire mount and with the 38 gallon that won't be possible. Not that it's a terribly convenient setup as is, so it wouldn't hurt my feelings too badly to see it go

Just look at your 2 tanks..that original poly tank is pretty much good as new. Poly all the way. The big Bronco poly tanks, i think they're like 32 gallons, fit in there, you just need to make longer straps or extend the hardware. It will hang down a couple inches lower than the original tank.

A plastic "polyethylene" tank is at least a way to NOT have a rust problem ever again.

After my original rear steel tank turned to rust internally in a matter of two years, I decided to go with plastic. It fit well and worked well (so far). Attached are some photos related to the change.

Thanks for the info and the pictures, Those are great!

I went ahead and bought the polymer, and I'm waiting to install it until after I finish everything else on the back half of the truck. I have box off and I'm going through everything.

Today I removed the side polymer fuel tank with the steel surround and found the surround is in terrible shape. I can't find a replacement surround and I'm wondering if the aftermarket steel or plastic side tanks can be installed with aftermarket brackets?

Thanks!

Highly unfortunate but no, the skid plate (cradle) is not reproduced by anyone. If you have enough good material, you can replace the rusted out portion with new metal or fabricate a whole new cradle. These are typically used under the Poly tanks only because they need more support than a steel tank.

Thanks
I've been investigating how feasible it'll be to cut and replace the effected areas but I'm wondering if it's to be possible to get an aftermarket plastic or steel tank and replace the OEM plastic one

There is a person on here that has his spare mounted below the 38g tank. I have my spare mounted in the bed. I love my 38g tank!

For those of you that replaced the rear 19g tank with a 38g one, did the exhaust need to be reconfigured?

I'm just starting my 1991 F150 project. I'm going to replace both tanks with steel tanks from Raybuck Auto Body Parts. I don't know anything about the company. The prices are a lot less than I imagined they would be. Do you know a good place to buy the pumps?
