No, the fit is not good. Others on here will confirm. I was in the SHO Taurus and Aerostar world simultaneously for close to 20 years. The 5L/V-8 swap makes 1000 times more sense and is a lot less work.

.
I've seen a couple of 5.0 swaps, one was on this site several years ago. The problem with the 5.0 swaps that I've seen (well, there are quite a few problems), is that they still had the carburetor on them. They didn't go the full route and install a fuel injected 5.0 V8.
Speaking of the SHO swap, I think the perfect swap would have been the 3.4L V8 Yamaha-machined engine that appeared in the 96-99 Taurus. Okay, I know there wasn't room for it and this V8 engine had massive camshaft failure, but it could have been the perfect marriage. Think about it: A 3.4 V8 engine in an extended van. I guess that's why they put the 4.0 engine in it instead. BTW, I still have a couple of new Ford 3.4 V8 Taurus engine blocks in my basement, still in the crates. Someday, if I can find some unobtainable head gaskets for these blocks, I'm going to put them in a project of mine.
I wouldn't kick a dead mule in the **** for the 3.4v8 sho engine, I had one for a few years. When a cam gear spun and grenaded the engine I put a used engine in it and drove it another 19k miles. When the $350 serpentine belt tensioner went out. I was lucky to find one on a dust covered shelf in some backwoods Alabama Ford dealer.
Drove it another couple hundred miles and donated it to charity. Loved the car overall but that engine just wasn't designed properly.
