NB needs no spark help 87 2.9L
A tiny history, first off I'm a GM guy, I know boo hiss, but this is my dad's truck and all he's ever owned is Fords so help him if not me
He's in his 70's, limited income so I'm the mechanic, wouldn't be a problem if it was a GM, I all ready know all the crappy stuff that's wrong with them
Anyway, 87 Ranger, 2.9L, Just quit in the driveway while running. No spark at the coil, I will check to see if there is pulseing at the neg side tomorrow (found that in my search) with a test light, there is a smell of gas while cranking so I figure the injectors are firing. I've seen things in my search about codes, is there an easy way to check codes without a scanner? With old GM's we go the paperclip, flashing light method, is something like this possible with a Ford of this age?
I used a DVM on the coil and I have 12V on the hot side and 12V on the low side which drops to 9 while cranking, I figure that it is pulsing just that the meter isn't fast enough to show it. If it is pulsing is it still possible that the coil is bad? It's like really rusty, does it depend upon the frame of the coil for a good ground?
The wireing in general looks really good for the age of the truck, no cracks, seals are good, no crud on the contacts.
Any suggestions you can give to an old GM guy to help an older Ford guy would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
