I have a 2001 7.3L PSD automatic towing an 11,000 lbs travel trailer RV and a couple of ATV's up on a rack in the bed. I have moved up to 285/75 tires from the stock 265/75, which causes my speedometer to read 5% low. If I try to drive 55 or so, then I am below the power curve when I start up even slight hills, causing me to shift out of overdrive at 1800 rpm up to 3000+ rpm in third gear. Needless to say, at that rpm, I burn more diesel than just cruising at 65 mph in overdrive at 2500 rpm and not needing to downshift at all.
So my question is whether there is a chip, like the diablo predator or the superchip one that is designed with this kind of load in mind that can handle accounting for larger tires. I do not see the tire sizing listed for either of those chips even though they list all sorts of other options. Also, when they refer to tuning the shifting, does this allow me to keep it from shifting out of overdrive until it knows it won't go above 2800 in the lower gear?
For diesels, the tuners can't adjust for tire size. They also do not let you adjust shift points. The DiabloSport Predator allows you to adjust shift firmness to your liking. The Superchips firms up the shifts but you get no choice in how firm it is.
For tire size changes I recommend you go with a DiabloSport Delta chip with stock/54HP/78HP settings. For towing the RV, leave in the 54HP setting. If you have an EGT gauge you can tow in the 78HP setting so long as you monitor exhaust temps.
You're going to find that any of the tuning products, be it a chip or programmer, will result in a lot less shift hunting.
