I’ve noticed a “bell” sound sometimes with my F350 when I engage the clutch, especially in granny low. Is this normal? Or is the clutch getting ready to go? Still engages fine, but it does grab pretty hard. 1982 F350 with 351W and 4 speed transmission. Sorry the description may not be the best. Hard to describe, but does sound like hitting a bell.
Could be a worn out U-joint. The driveshaft can ring like a bell.
It is easy to check. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels. Put the transmission in neutral. Place a finger across the gap between the two halves of each U-joint. With your other hand, try to rotate the driveshaft back and forth. If there is any play, you will feel it across the gap.
And while we’re on the subject, what’s brown and sounds like a bell?
