I’ve seen that vid. But I don’t see the grommet on my truck that they drilled through in the vid.
Theres better ways to do it. You really shouldn't even need to go into the cab. When I get mine I'm going to try and tap into the the Trailer Harness thats just there laying unplugged for the 5th wheel setup. Theres already wire there for power and running lights that should kick on when you lock and unlock truck etc or run at night with lights on. Also because its the trailer harness you should have turn signal as well.
Here is a thread I contributed to when I installed mine. Harness is in the sill plate and there is a grommet in the front seat foot wells that you can use to get to the underside.
I edited my post. I want the lights to come on when I unlock/open a door. Like the lights on the bottom of the mirrors.
So I got the power mirrors on my XLT which come with the spotlights. I was thinking that when I hit unlock those lights would light up for x amount of time, effectively illuminating the side of the trucks. Am I misunderstanding this, or are they just not bright enough to light up the steps?

I have the same. For me I’m just looking for more light when unlocking/opening the door when it’s dark.
I’ll have to look and see if the plug may be hidden in the sill. Thanks.
It's very visible as soon as you pull the sill up. If it's there you're in luck. Rest is down hill from there. Lights come on when you unlock or open the door and fade off when you close and or lock the door.
I can provide what lights I used if you want a true white light.

There should be a plug on the outside of the frame rail that you can plug into towards the rear of the cab. I added a 60” light strip on each side when I installed my AMP Xtreme power steps but if I kept my stock boards I was going to use the plug. Mine come on as soon as the door is opened and the boards drop. Here’s a few pics of what they look like.
The problem is the plug isn't always on the frame rail. My 2017 Platinum had the plug on the frame rail but my 2021 Lariat didn't. I don't know if anyone ever figured out why some models do and some don't. Both of my trucks were Ultimates and both had factory power running boards.
