I have an 86 F150 4x4 tow package, 302, 3 speed with od. It has 40,000 original miles and it's on its second clutch. First owner burnt up first clutch at 10,000 towing his boat, he was too lazy to lock the hubs and use 4wd. Anyway, of all the cars and trucks I've driven, it has the stiffest clutch. It is hyd. Are they all like this or am I missing something. I'm used to it and it has always been like this. Just wondering if there's something wrong. Fluid is full, linkage by trans squeaks a little when you release the pedal. no leaks.
Mine is normal not stiff at all. If you have a sqeak could be something going on with your pressure plate or throw out bearing. You could unhook the slave cylinder and move the linkage (fork that moves the throw out bearing) and see if it moves freely. If it does then maybe somethings up with the pressure plate. Both of these are going to be some work to replace so if it's not bothering you and it works fine..... Don't fix it if it's not broke!
Nick ,
my 84 used to be stiffer than you know what too! I replaced the clutch Master Cylinder,Clutch Slave Cylinder, even the hose with no results. Does your tranny shift hard too? Mine did.
When I converted to 3/4 ton I used the system that came with the 460. It works great.
No clue why some are that way.
If the clutch was replaced by a regular shop, they probably didn't reset the clutch pedal by replacing the bellcrank (lever). It's a $12 part from Ford, and it's pretty easy to remove/replace. Click my signature and look at the last pictures in the Hydraulic Clutch photo album.
