I have a 1983 Ford f150 4x4 xlt swb. I currently have a 300 i6 with the 4 spd with the granny gear in it at the moment, but I recently received a 351w that I am going to swap into it. I was looking into possibly getting a 5 speed trans to swap into it. Looking to see what kind of bellhousing and possible 5 speeds to swap into it. Lmk thanks
The 351W was paired with the ZF 5 speed in later trucks. You will have to convert to a hydraulic clutch, but OEM parts from an '84 and up truck. The ZF showed up in '87-'88 and has an integral bell. You would probably get everything you need from a donor with the 351w/5er combo.
Ford also used a Mazda built 5 speed. Not sure if they offered this trans behind the 351w, but they definitely offered it behind the 302, so it would fit. It's the weaker brother of the zf. All the 5 speeds have integral bellhousings like a automatic trans, so you need to find a 5 speed that was behind a 300 six, 302 or 351w for it to fit. Of course make sure it's a 4x4 trans also.
If all you want is over drive and use 4x4 then Advance Adapter makes a over drive that bolts between the trans you have now and the bell housing you have now.
You will need 2 new drive shafts but you would for the 5sp swap also.
