I recently bought a 94 5.0 4x4 that has a nearly immaculate body and interior. You all know how hard that is to find in the upper Midwest where I bought it. It had been garaged for nearly every winter of its life. However when I was under the front end doing some other work I noticed these spots that are rusted through and they look bad. They don't look like part of the frame or engine mounts to me but maybe a front clip mount? I am not sure. So I thought maybe someone here would know what these are.
For reference, in order the pics are the left and right sides. I am laying down face up with my legs sticking forward.
Those look like the radiator core support bushings. I think you can get replacement parts for most of the support. I replaced the bushings on mine and the support was not in as good of shape as the rest of the underbody.
I can’t say how bad it is.. you would have to disassemble it and see.
That is your radiator core support. Yes, your front clip mounts. It basically ties the front body of the truck together and holds the radiator in place. It doesn’t look like it’s quite sagging yet, but getting there. Those rubber bushings are getting there too.. the plastic wheel well liner is attached to it at the bottom. You could pull those bolts out and have a look, but you probably won’t have much left to reattach it if you do, it will probably come apart on you somewhat in those areas - especially that lh side.
You can repair it if you like Fab/welding projects, or buy a new one. Much easier to buy new and install it. It’s quite common on a lot of vehicles to rust out in that area. The rest of the support is probably getting pretty rusty under there too.
Thanks jeff! That is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like a big job but not impossible. But also doesn't look urgent yet. There is no visible sagging for sure. Mostly I am just glad this is not something that is the death of this otherwise great truck.
