292 bent pushrod

I have a friend that is looking at a 292. The owner said it kept bending pushrods, or a pushrod. Why would this be, overspeeding? They did have upper oiling problems, did they not? The engine was in a '60 F250 4x4 with 4:56 gears.

I know of a salvage yard in southern Oregon that has a supposedly rebuilt 317 for sale.

Many do not realize that the Y is a solid lifter engine and try to adjust as if it was a Chebby.
Also earlier engines had hollow pushrods but that was changed around 56 I believe to a solid rod.

Upper oiling problems were mostly due to running non detergent oil. The rear cam bearing & cam was also changed in 55 to give better flow.
A 292 today running on something like a good 20W50 will have no oiling problems.

Almost forgot, the 317 is a Lincoln style Y, totally different than the Ford. The biggest Ford is the 312.

When I was in the process of rebuilding my 272, I had a carb that was leaking and the timing was off. Anyway, I didn't run the engine for very long periods, just got it hot then shut it off. What happened to me was the valves began to stick from the leaky carb and then it began to bend pushrods. After I removed the heads and cleaned them up, put in new pushrods, got the timing right, and fixed the carb leak, I have not had any problems. Hopefully, this helps.
