Big ignition problem, help please

I have a 1995 e350 with the 7.3. Today, I drove to a car show and parked the van. I went to start it hours later only to find the ignition switch inoperable. It has lost the click click feeling and wouldn’t start the van.
I go over to the parts store for a new ignition cylinder and promptly replace it. The truck starts first try. The problem was fixed, or so I thought.
I drive home and go to shut down the van down, only to find I can’t. I put the key off and remove it and the truck still is clack a lacking like no ones business. Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated. I did eventually get the truck to shut down by pulling a fuse in the power distribution box.
Also I had to disconnect the batteries because the radio would not power off. It’s as if the ignition cylinder lost its function. What can cause this and how do I fix it? Thank you all very much for reading my story and trying to help me out
-Marc

The lock cylinder is NOT the ignition switch.

The switch is located halfway down the column on top and there is a rod from the lock cylinder that actuates the switch.

Ok thanks for the info. Is the rod something that can come lose? Is it worth tearing it open, What do you suggest I do?

Its not worth tearing it open, just get a new one. They are pretty cheap and a common failure.
