It just got really cold around here a few days ago. That's about when I started getting the light. It comes on after driving for about 3-4 minutes, like clockwork. I don't have access to a scanner. Could it be caused by an o2 sensor? Thanks
Speaking of 'check engine' light.. ..do they ever burn out? mine has been on for a little while (friggin' egr, vaccum leak, whatever) and now its not on anymore.. ..i seem to remember it coming on briefly when I started the engine, right? do the bells when you start up have any meaning other then to fasten seat belts? How would one tell if the light doesn't work? I would think those lights would last quite a long time... it is a 96 f150.
I have a 95 f-150 with the same problem. Engine check light comes usually while accelerating on the highway then goes out after about one minute. Then returns again when it feels like it a sometimes goes for days without doing it. I took it to a garage and they found out it was a vent valve for the gas tank not operating all the time. I was told this would create no problems and I need not worry about!!?

T-Bone,
That is a good question. I didn't ask or pursue any further at the time because I was told that it would affect anything. I will check with the mechanic that performed the diagnostics to get some more info.

Yes your O2 can cause the intermittent CEL, it happened on mine. If it runs good but getting a little less mileage and the sensor hasn't been changed in a while I would change it (even if it wasn't the problem). I don't like recommending changing parts without reading the codes though. Click here to learn how without a scanner (I just use a test light and a jumper wire).

The CEL should come on with the key. If it doesn't it's burned out from staying on. Those cool bells.....well, just the door adjar and seat belts.
T-Bone,
Hey, got ahold of the mechanic that troubleshot my engine light issue. He said that is was a purge valve that was not working all the time. This valve I beleive diverts emissions back to the gas tank?! He also said that the egr valve failure is also a big hitter for f-150 check engine lights.
