Strange noise

Peculiar problem I am having and wonder if anyone else has experienced similar.
While towing our trailer I hear a high pitched squeal. It is not dependent on engine speed but appears between 45 and 50 mph. If I tap the brakes it stops momentarily but returns.
On a different note, if I tap the brakes too often the pedal gets very firm and I don’t have any brakes for a few seconds.
The squeal doesn’t happen if I’m towing on level ground only on inclines.
Any ideas? I suspect the brakes are dragging slightly but not enough to cause a smell

Possibly trailer brake squeal?
Trailer wheel bearings?
Have you greased them?
Usually trailer bearings have a zerk fitting for grease gun.

Definitely NOT the trailer brakes, since this noise has happened when I'm driving without trailer.
The peculiar thing about it, is that it only seems to occur when driving UPHILL...a time when you're not typically using the brakes.
At first I thought maybe the pads were worn and the "squealers" may be touching....but I've had tires replaced recently and that shop is pretty good at pointing out stuff like that so that they can make a few extra bucks.
I guess I'll have to get under there myself and see...

Sounds like sticky brakes.. The brakes firm and not there is a sure give away.. Even if the pads are not worn they can squeal.. For example when i had metallic pads and used my brakes alot in stop and go traffic, they would get hot and start squealing. The metallic pads had 50%+ meat on them before changing to ceramics that dont have that issue (atleast in the same route the metallics would).

So short story is it common for brakes to squeal once overheated (sticky calibers) even if the pads have plenty of life.
