Timing cover question
The coolant path looks Like it may have severe corrosion. Is this normal?

Excessive corrosion?

FORD Y-BLOCK 272 292 312 TIMING COVER | eBay

Seems that's where the pump passes water through most likely. Look at the one in the link.

Yup...water passage. However, you could take a die grinder and clean it up to help smooth the water flow...
