Would a turbo'd 2.3 lima with an m5od, with 3.90 gears do alright in an extended, lifted 4wd aero? I have been looking into an engine swap for some time now. My stock one, although in a somewhat healthy condition, has a lot of buildup and scaling in the coolant passages and has already gone through 4 freeze plugs. Since it's only a matter of time before it blows a gasket, I want to weight my options and lean towards something other than another 4.0/3.0. Im not looking to go fast, but I certainly don't want to take a whole day to go up a hill.
i assume your van now has a four cylinder.id look at the performance records of the tbird turbo cars which i assume probably weigh about the same.if you google turbo four tbird theres some high hp cars out there.
It's a nice thought, but the extended length 4WD Aerostar weighs over 4000 pounds; a few hundred more than the Tbird turbocoup. The last model year had the strongest engine, at 190HP, but the torque is below that of the 4L v6. Of course, you can try souping it up with a bigger turbo, modified wastegate, hotter cam. You would want to put a T5 transmission behind it instead of the M5OD as the latter will not handle the load.

A T5 would be a better option. I figured 4.10s would help with the lack of torque, but Im not so sure now. Especially if have to build one up to that degree. Maybe it would be better suited for a shorty 4x4 aero.
I don't think there is a 4x4 shorty Aero, but there is nothing to prevent someone from putting that parts to build such a vehicle.
Also, all the AWD Aerostars used 3.73:1 ratio at both ends. You mayeasily find 4.1:1 gears for the 7.5 rear axle, but not sure if you can find that for the Dana 28 front axle.
