96 E250 oil

Hi...this is my first time to the sight. I recently purchased a 96 E250 4X4 conversion van...my first van. I’m wanting to know if I can get some help regarding my van and oil changes. Seems like a pretty simple thing...EXCEPT...things aren’t adding up. I changed the oil and filter in my van last weekend...EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY says it takes 6 qts of oil when changing with filter. I put in 5 qts...started it, shut it down, and checked it. Dipstick reads full. VIN# says 351 engine. Checked the number on the dipstick...says it’s the right one. Let it sit over night thinking maybe air bubble? Still reads full. Today...I pulled the filter, drained it and the new oil. Reinstalled the filter, and added new oil again. At 5 qts, the dipstick is full.

Can someone please help me with what they think the issue could be.

Thanks in advance for any information I can get.

So does "Everything and Everybody" mean all the info that you've found online? If so, then 6 quarts HAS to be correct

The factory service manual and owner's manual probably say different. I think even the Haynes manual says 5 qts. although the Haynes manuals sometimes have wrong info.

It would help you a lot if you go on eBay/Amazon and get a FSM and an owner's manual. Or at least a Haynes.

WOW…not gonna lie. Pretty stupid right now…never once consulted the manual. Listened to the guys at Napa and then went on line. As many times as I’ve been burnt by the info web…you would think I would know better. Thank you Econo93 for your help!

My guess about this difference would be 6 quarts would be necessary when/if the oil filter is replaced during the oil change. My own 5.4's call for 5.7 quarts which is rounded up to a total of 6 quarts however I fill the filter before its installed. I've never had an issue with that practice.

The ‘07 owner manual says 5.7 liters which is 6 quarts for the 5.4. 4.7 liters is 5 quarts which is likely the spec for the 5.8.
