Need tips on installing O2 sensor on passenger side before cat
I can see the sensor and connector but I can't reach the connector.
Can anyone who had successfully replace that O2 sensor give me some tips?
Thanks
Kam
seems to me you could do the same thing with the truck on stands high enough to reach over the transmission.
I have the same problem - but haven't tried it yet
I changed both of the front O2 sensors on out 99 Expy w/ 5.4L auto tranny and it was a real bear. The drivers was a breeze but that passenger side had me stumped. I left the truck on my ramps for a couple of days and later got a letter from my home owners assoc. Gotta love 'em...
I finally pulled the exhaust loose from the factory hangers and then found that the transmission crossmember was in the way. The exhaust still hit that preventing the exhaust from moving further back.
Of course at some point I had gotten the special O2 socket stuck on the sensor and finally managed to get it loose. The real problem wasn't the connector on that side but the transmission dispstick tube was in the way of manuevering any wrench.
This was one job I would've left to the dealer had I known.
Good luck.
Here is the tip:
1. Use a string to loop around the sensor cables. Tie the two ends so you don't lose it;
2. Find a long object that can reach and push the lock on the connector inward to unlock it. I found the tip on an old CB antenna can do the trick. You can practice this on your new O2 sensor;
3. Now you can go under your truck again. Use your right hand to pull down the string and your left hand to push in the lock on the connector using the special tool you made in step 2. In this way, you can disconnect the connector without reaching it with your fingers, which causes most of the problems;
4. After replacing the sensor, you can use the same tool in step 2 to raise the connector on the sensor side up to mate with the upper one. You can turn it to align them. After you push it in a little bit, you can use another object to push it in further and make them lock.
I hope this tip can save you some time and money, and most importantly, your fingers!
I tried to get the sensor lose on two different weekends and still faile to get the sensor lose.
Two weekends ago I tried to access the sensor from the wheel well using an O2 sensor socket and a flex head rachet, no luck.
This afternoon, I tried from the bottom of the truck using a 7/8 wrench.
I think I partially stipped the base of the sensor.
How did you all lose or disconnect the sensor???
I didn't have any problem just to pop the sensor loose with the wrench opened side.
On the passenger side, you can try to use the looped side of the wrench by sliding it on along the cable (after you disconnect it). You can also try a wrench with different length.
Good luck!
