Kids and I decided to go camping. We also decided to to take the 66.
I've owned this truck since February. Mechanically it's sound. We loaded up some basic tools, fluids and headed out.
I didn't take into account the fact our favorite camp site is down a 22 mile long dirt road that in bad shape. So all the issues we had were, from what I can tell, the vibrations. We had a no start at a gas station that was a loose battery cable. We lost the air filter. The 22 mile dirt road was traversed 4 times in total. So, we abused the ole girl.
On the drive home we started having fueling issues. Now, when I bought the truck it had been driven a while. It clearly had a new fuel pump. I wrongly assumed the fuel system was cleaned.
I didn't have a means to change the on pump filter on the drive. There is an inline that I cleaned twice. I also pulled the carb and cleaned it along the road side. After a while she seemed to be fine. But I grabbed a wix in the way home and changed it right away. The pictures tell the story. I'm going to have to drain the tank and clean it
567 miles.
17.9 mpg on the highway(55-60)
A best tank of 19.07 mpg.
Nice looking truck. Sounds like a good trip despite the fuel issues and long lasting memories for you and the kids.
I just look at the fuel issues this way.
My daughter learned to recognize and troubleshoot in a real world scenario where we could work on it with the safety net that my friend and his trailer were on standby
Hat off to you for building memories with your kids in a classic old pickup. Did the same thing with our three kiddos and they all still appreciate and remember riding in and learning to drive in my 66 F100. When my oldest son comes to visit and stay with us with his family and we climb into Ol Blue and take a drive his memories take him back to his childhood and riding with his Dad.
