Long warmup.
I think my 1996 F150 5.8 E4OD takes too long before the motor reach the right temperature and it use a lot of gas during this time, especially now when outside temp drops. My 82-250 400-motor warms up much quicker. I have not checked the thermostat yet, but could it be something else? What exact is the purpose of that short tube between thermostatehouse and waterpump? Looking forward to some ideas.

I believe it is a bypass hose, that is it bypasses some coolant when the thermostat is closed untill the engine warms up. Your problem could be that the T-stat could be stuck open so it takes a long time for the circulating coolant to heat up. The reason for the T-stst is to hold most of the engine coolant in the block until it warms up to the prescribed temp then opens to prevent it from over heating.
