Ok, I've got a ' 69 390. I was told the cam was bad in it an it needs replaced because it keeps destroying a couple of lifters. Then the guy down the road told me the FE's had different ways of retaining the camshaft in different years, since this block is replacing a ' 67 block he said maybe they screwed up and mixed up the wrong parts with the wrong blocks. Has anyone ever heard of this or Know what he's talking about? I'd like to know before I tear it appart. thanks in advance.........Special ' 67
'58 - '62 FE cams were retained by a thrust button while the '63 and later ones were retained by a thrust plate. The button style used a 1 1/4" bolt and 7/8" dowel, the plate style used a 1 7/8" bolt and 1 1/2" dowel.
Also from '63 - '69 there was a spacer between the cam sprocket and the thrust plate. '70 and later had the spacer built into the cam sprocket. Any replacement sprocket will have the spacer built in so don't use the separate spacer with it.
